Agartala, September 08, 2023: A son who raped his own mother in Takarjala area of Tripura was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Bishalgarh Sessions Judge Court on Friday evening.
The incident took place on May 2, 2022, when the accused, Ajay Debbarma, sexually assaulted his mother at their home. The mother filed a case of rape against her son at the Takarjala police station on May 5, 2022, with the case number ST type 1/19/2022.
The police arrested Debbarma and kept him in jail custody. They investigated the case and presented the evidence and testimonies of 20 witnesses to the court. The Additional Sessions Judge Bishal Gour found Debbarma guilty of rape under Section 376(2)(F) of the Indian Penal Code and awarded him life imprisonment. He also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.
The government lawyer Gautam Giri informed the media persons about the verdict. He said that this was a rare and heinous crime that deserved severe punishment. He said that this might be the first time in the state’s history that a son raped his mother.
The locals welcomed the court’s decision and demanded that Debbarma should not get any leniency in jail. They said that such barbaric acts should not be tolerated in society.
