Sonamura Bazar: Security panel formed to strengthen protection

Agartala, 16th May 2025:  Despite challenges posed by storms, rain and bitter cold, the night guards of Sonamura Bazar remain steadfast in their duty to ensure the security of the market and surrounding homes. Officials from the Sonamura Bazar Night Security Committee lauded their commitment during a press conference. 

The committee held its triennial general meeting yesterday at the conference hall of Sonamura Nagar Panchayat, where a 17-member panel was formed. As per regulations, the panel will elect office bearers, including the secretary and president, within the next week. 

Sonamura Nagar Panchayat Chairperson Sarada Chakraborty, Vice-Chairperson Shahjahan Mia and Sonamura Police Station OC Jayanta Kumar Dey were present at the meeting. Outgoing secretary of the Sonamura Bazar Night Security Committee, veteran businessman and journalist Swapan Chakraborty announced that two additional guards would be appointed for security duties with their salaries covered by the Nagar Panchayat. 

Currently, the security team consists of eight guards and one money collector, each receiving a monthly salary of Rs 5,700. Of these, three guards are paid Rs 5,000 by the Nagar Panchayat, while the remaining salaries are covered through contributions from traders. 

During a press conference at the committee office, outgoing president Jahar Das was joined by traders Babul Singh, Barun Saha, Narayan Deb and Hannan Mia, among others to discuss the security measures and express appreciation for the guards’ unwavering service.
