Agartala, 19th April 2025: Sonamura Nagar Panchayat CEO and Chairman of the Education Standing Committee Rakesh Ghosh had come under fire for allegedly assaulting a mentally unstable individual Chandan Singha.
It is reported that the incident took place yesterday evening when Chandan Singha, a familiar figure in the area was sitting behind CEO Ghosh’s car parked on the roadside sipping a cold drink he had purchased from a nearby shop. Locals claimed, in a sudden fit of anger, Commissioner Ghosh began verbally abusing Singha before escalating the situation by physically assaulting him. Allegedly, Ghosh removed his own belt and used it to beat the defenseless man.
A local in condition of anonymity described the scene as “inhumane and deeply unsettling.” She added, “Chandan has never caused harm to anyone in the locality. He is mentally unbalanced but harmless. To see someone in a position of power behave this way is unacceptable.”
The aftermath of the incident saw Singha disappear for the night, reportedly out of fear. His family members informed by a witness searched for him but only found him the next morning in an injured state. They immediately took him to the Sonamura Community Health Center for medical treatment. Following this, the family filed a formal complaint against CEO Ghosh at the Sonamura Police Station.
Speaking to reporters in front of police station, Singha’s elder brother Dipak Singha demanded justice. “My brother has suffered enough. We want the authorities to take strict action against Rakesh Ghosh. No one, regardless of their position, should be allowed to treat another human being like this,” Singha stated.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage in Sonamura Nagar Panchayat with locals questioning the behavior of CEO Ghosh, who is otherwise known as a social worker affiliated with the ruling party. Many residents expressed disbelief and disappointment, emphasizing that Singha has never posed a threat to anyone in the locality.
“This is not the kind of leadership we expect from someone who claims to be a social worker. We demand accountability and justice for Chandan,” said a local resident.
