Agartala, 27th April 2025: Sonamura police have achieved significant progress in the high-profile school theft case that recently shocked the city. Within just two days of the incident, authorities arrested five suspected thieves and one individual accused of purchasing stolen goods.
Speaking to reporters here, Sonamura police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jayanta Kumar Dey confirmed that the thefts took place on the night of April 24 last at the Sonamura Class XII Girls’ School and the Nabadwip Chandra Institution. Acting swiftly, police arrested Jhutan Pal of Matanbari under Jatrapur police station and Gobinda Das of Khash Chowmuhani under Melaghar police station on the night of April 25 last.
During interrogation, the two suspects revealed the names of additional accomplices. Following this lead, a raid was conducted yesterday afternoon, resulting in the arrest of Jewel Hossain from Tamsabari, another Jewel Hossain from Nalchhar, Sumon Das from Melaghar and Benu Debnath from Sonamura. Benu Debnath, a trader in old goods is accused of purchasing various stolen items. The four suspects detained yesterday have been presented in Sonamura court. This decisive police action has brought a sense of relief to the local residents. It is worth noting that the same night as the school thefts, a ration shop in the Khedabari area and a farmer’s field in the Dhaliai area was also targeted by robbers. Local authorities continue to investigate the case to recover stolen property and ensure justice is served.
