Agartala, 25th September 2025: With just a day or two left before the grand Sharadiya Durga Puja celebrations, Sonamura’s bustling market remains eerily quiet. Traders are growing increasingly anxious as footfall has plummeted, leaving stalls and shops largely deserted.
Several key factors have contributed to this downturn: The hanging bridge on the southern side of Sonamura market remains in disrepair, cutting off access for a significant portion of the local population. The road construction between Udaipur and Sonamura-Srimantapur has been left half-finished. The broken and uneven stretches have made travel difficult, discouraging shoppers from venturing into the market. Traders report that many locals, particularly those from the cattle-rearing community, have yet to receive wages for their work in the Ragar sector. This has left them cash-strapped, further dampening the festive shopping spirit.
As a result, Sonamura’s Durga Puja market usually vibrant and crowded during this time is facing an unprecedented lull. Local businesses are hoping for a last-minute turnaround, but with time running out, the mood remains grim.
