Agartala, 30th March 2024: In a landmark judgment, the South Tripura district court at Belonia has sentenced a 35-year-old man, Nimai Das, to ten years of rigorous imprisonment for a grave sexual assault committed in 2020. The verdict was passed after a careful examination of the testimonies from 14 witnesses, leading to Das’s conviction under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code for rape.
The case, which has been closely followed by the public, stems from an incident on August 30, 2020, in the South Sonaichari area under the jurisdiction of the Belonia police station. The victim, a housewife, reported the crime at the Belonia Women’s Police Station, leading to the immediate arrest of Nimai Das on the same night. The police, after a thorough investigation, filed a charge sheet against Das under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 341, 376(m), 325, and 506, indicating various degrees of criminal conduct.
According to the details provided by the prosecution, on the day of the incident, Das intercepted the victim while she was returning home from the paddy fields. He then forcibly took her to a nearby forest where he committed the assault. The victim, after the ordeal, managed to return home and inform her husband of the incident, which led to the filing of the case number 44/2020 at the women’s police station.
The victim was initially treated at Belonia Hospital and later transferred to GB Hospital for further care. Following her recovery, she returned home. The sentence delivered by the court has brought a sense of relief and justice to the victim and her family. The prosecution of the case was led by PP Subrata Bhattacharya, whose efforts have been instrumental in securing the conviction.
This case has highlighted the judicial system’s role in addressing crimes of a serious nature and the importance of providing a safe environment for women in society.
