Agartala, 23rd May 2025: In a landmark initiative to raise awareness about biodiversity conservation, the state government of Tripura celebrated World Turtle Day for the first time today at Dhanyamanikya Mukta Mancha, located in the historic temple town of Matabari, Udaipur. The event was formally inaugurated by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy.
Speaking on the occasion, the Finance Minister emphasized the importance of World Turtle Day, observed globally on May 23, as a moment to not only express affection for turtles but to also reflect on the urgent need to protect their natural habitat. “To preserve our social balance, we must protect biodiversity. This initiative reflects our government’s commitment to conservation,” he said.
Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, also present at the event, highlighted the critical link between biodiversity and human survival. “To protect human society, we must preserve the ecosystem. This means safeguarding not just forests, but also the turtles, birds, and other animals that inhabit them,” Debbarma remarked. He stressed the need to create favorable conditions for the reproduction and growth of turtle populations in the state.
The program also saw participation from MLA Abhishek Debroy, Chief Conservator of Forests RK Samal, MLA Jitendra Majumdar, Gomati Zilla Parishad President Debal Debroy, District Forest Officer H. B. Ganesh, Matabari Panchayat Samiti Chairperson Shilpi Das, District Magistrate of Gomati Tarit Kanti Chakma, and Matabari Block BDO Arijit Pal, among others.
