Agartala, 23rd May 2025: Tripura’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, on Thursday announced that the state government has taken significant steps to improve the living standards of tea garden workers by providing them with land on lease for permanent settlement, as well as access to welfare schemes including free rations and LPG connections.
Speaking at the inauguration of a new tea leaf sales centre and the launch of updated tea marketing packets at the Durgabari Tea Garden, Nath said the initiatives are part of a broader effort by both the central and state governments to uplift marginalized communities.
“A range of developmental projects are underway to ensure the welfare of the last person in the queue,” the Minister said, underlining the state’s commitment to inclusive growth.
Highlighting the importance of the tea sector, Nath said that India remains the second-largest tea producer in the world, with Tripura making steady progress in the industry. “We have 52 tea gardens across the state, employing 10,438 workers. So far, 3,339 families of tea workers have been allotted homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana,” he added.
Also present at the event, Cooperatives Minister Shuklacharan Noatia emphasized the critical role of cooperative societies in national development. “Tea consumption is growing among tribal communities, and it’s important that more members of the tribal population engage in the tea industry,” he said.He noted that the government is actively working on effective, people-centric policies aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods and boosting local economies.
