Agartala, 13th June 2024: Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das announced on Thursday that the department is working in a mission mode to enhance fish production in Tripura to meet the high local demand and has identified some new locations for fish cultivation.
Chairing a review meeting, Minister Das mentioned that this was the first state-level review meeting of the Fisheries Department in a long time, previously postponed due to the election.
“The primary objective of this meeting is to evaluate the achievements and successes based on the 2023-24 financial year budget. We have set targets for different districts to boost fish production, mobilize the fisheries department, and meet the state’s fish demand. This meeting was convened to address these issues. All Deputy Directors from every district and other officials attended. We also identified the department’s shortcomings. For the 2024-25 fiscal year, we will work towards achieving this year’s targets in a mission mode, despite delays caused by the election,” he said.
He emphasized that the state is still falling short in meeting the high demand for fish.
“Currently, we are importing 15,000 to 20,000 metric tons of fish from outside the state. This is a significant challenge. However, in 2023-24, we have sanctioned a major project in Haoarmia, Unakoti district, to initiate fish production. Additionally, four new locations across the state have been identified for fish cultivation to increase local fish production,” he informed reporters.
