Agartala: June 27: The state government today has announced that as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, five convicted prisoners who have completed 66 percent of their sentence and have demonstrated good conduct will be released on August 15th.
Addressing a press conference this evening, Tapash Roy, the secretary of the prisons under Home (Jail) Department said that Tripura Compensation Scheme for Women Victims-2018 Act has so far provided Rs 1.36 crore as compensation to 26 victims of various crimes including rape, domestic violence.
He said that there are currently 14 correctional facilities in the state including the central correctional home. It includes a women’s correctional home and among these 14 the total capacity is 2,365 inmates.
“At present there are 1,335 convicts in various correctional facilities in the state. The correctional facilities provide all kinds of facilities including medical facilities to the inmates. Apart from this, medical camps are sometimes organized in the districts”, he said.
He further informed that the process of recruiting 249 women warden for various correctional homes in the state is underway.
“Physical examination has already been completed. After that written test and oral interview will be conducted. The age limit for job application has been increased from 24 to 27 years of age by amending the recruitment policy so that more number of job aspirants can participate in the post of female warden. Besides, there will be 5 years age relaxation for SC, ST”, he said.
He said that as part of the Azadi Ka Amrita Mohotsav, as per the instructions of the Central Government, an initiative has been taken to release the convicts of the state who have completed 66 percent of their sentence and are of good conduct on August 15, 2023.
“5 such accused will be released on that day in two phases”, he informed.
In the press conference, the secretary said that like other departments, initiatives have been taken to make all the activities of the prison paperless. Already some of the functions of the office have been made paperless.
