Agartala, 24th July 2023: Asmita Dey, the 20-year-old sporting sensation from Tripura, has once again brought pride to her state by winning the gold medal at the esteemed Junior Asia Cup Judo Championship held in Macau, China. Her journey to success was nothing short of extraordinary.
Right from the preliminary round, Asmita showcased her exceptional prowess, dominating Group D and securing a resounding victory over Hong Kong’s Suet Yiu Tang. Her remarkable performance earned her a well-deserved bye in the main opening round, setting the stage for further triumphs.
In the intense semi-final, the talented Indian judoka, who had previously won silver in the Asian Open 2023 in Kuwait City and a bronze in the Asian Junior Championships 2022, exhibited her determination and skill by defeating Australia’s Ashlyn Do. With unwavering momentum, Asmita carried her winning spirit into the final showdown, where she outperformed another Australian, Anneliese Fielder, to secure the gold medal in the fiercely contested 48 kg category.
Not only did Asmita shine, but she was also joined by her fellow Indian judokas in creating a glorious moment for the country. Unnati Sharma (63kg) and Arun Kumar (73kg) both stood proudly atop the podium, clinching gold medals in their respective categories. The Indian contingent’s outstanding performances throughout the championship resulted in an impressive tally of three gold, one silver, and one bronze medal in the Junior Asia Cup Judo Championships.
