Agartala, 8th August 2026 : Neglect and years without repair have left the hanging steel footbridge connecting Mela Ghar to Telkajla increasingly dangerous. Large holes have formed as steel plates corrode, forcing residents to cross daily at great personal risk.
The bridge, a vital link for five panchayat areas on the southern bank of the Gomati river, has now become a source of fear. Locals warn that even a minor slip could lead to a major accident. Small mishaps have already been reported.
Despite media coverage a month ago highlighting the bridge’s dilapidated state, no effective repair work has begun. With each passing day, the structure grows more perilous.
The bridge was inaugurated in 2013 by then Chief Minister Manik Sarkar. Years of use without regular maintenance have left several sections critically damaged. Residents say the problem is not new, but official inaction has deepened public anger.
The pressing question remains: will authorities act only after a major tragedy, or will preventive steps be taken now?
Local commuters demand immediate inspection, identification of damaged portions, and urgent repairs. They also call for safety measures until restoration is complete.
