Agartala, 2nd January 2026 :  The Special Task Force (STF) carried out a series of raids this afternoon in areas adjacent to the Sabroom SDM office, targeting shops and residences. While the administration has not disclosed the official reason behind the operation, sources suggest it is linked to a suspected racket involving fake Aadhaar cards.

The operation began with raids on several shops within the SDM office premises, where shopkeepers were questioned. Later, STF teams moved to the Vidyapalli Panchayat area, conducting searches at multiple houses. Among those raided was the residence of BJP leader and vice-president of the Sakram assembly constituency, Debjani Das.

Das, whose husband Sujit Chowdhury is a school teacher, claimed that nothing incriminating was found during the search. She further alleged harassment during the raid, despite it being conducted “in full compliance with rules.”

The STF also raided the photocopy shop of Narayan Kumar De, located next to the SDM office. Allegations have surfaced that fake Aadhaar cards were being issued from shops and even residences of political leaders and activists in the area. Reports indicate large-scale financial transactions linked to the racket.

Officials believe the operation is aimed at curbing illegal immigration. Intelligence inputs suggest that individuals from conflict-hit Bangladesh have been entering India and securing fake documents to remain in the country. A wider syndicate is suspected to be involved, and the raids are expected to continue on Saturday. Administrative officials, however, have declined to comment.

The crackdown comes days after a member of a banned Bangladeshi militant group was apprehended in Agartala’s Joynagar area on December 31. The Assam Police led the operation, arresting 11 individuals from different locations in Assam and Tripura, including one from Tripura. Reports suggest that several more suspects remain on the Assam Police’s radar.
