Agartala, 28th April 2026: The Gomati District Education Office has taken an unprecedented step to curb the long-standing practice of government teachers engaging in private tuition, a practice widely criticized as detrimental to the state’s education system. On April 18, 2026, District Education Officer (DEO) issued a special memorandum (No. F.2(27)/EDN(G)/2025/88), mandating all government teachers to submit a written undertaking declaring they are not involved in private tuition or coaching.
The directive cites Section 28 of the RTI Act, 2009, which prohibits government teachers from conducting private tuition, deeming it a violation of service rules. Headmasters across Gomati district are now required to collect signed undertakings from their staff, to be stored at the school and subject to inspection at any time. To ensure compliance, special monitoring committees have been formed at the subdivision level. Any teacher found guilty of violating the directive will face disciplinary action, and headmasters who conceal such violations will also be held accountable.
This bold move has been welcomed by educated unemployed youth, who have long campaigned against the practice, arguing that it blocks employment opportunities for them while depriving students of quality classroom education. They are now demanding that the same model be implemented across all eight districts of Tripura. Parents, too, have voiced concerns that some teachers prioritize private coaching over school teaching, undermining the integrity of public education.
The Gomati initiative has set a strong precedent, placing the Education Department in “action mode” and raising expectations for similar enforcement statewide. For many, this marks a turning point in the fight to restore fairness and accountability in Tripura’s education system.
