Agartala, 8th August 2026 : Senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Saturday accused the police, administration and Agartala Municipal Corporation of acting under political pressure after officials allegedly objected to temporary arrangements made for a Youth Congress programme in Agartala.
Roy Barman said the Youth Congress had informed the police about its plan to live-stream Rahul Gandhi’s programme through LED screens. He claimed that arrangements for two LED screens, sound boxes and microphones had been communicated in advance.
According to him, a temporary platform was constructed only to provide a safe base for the heavy LED equipment, as the screens could not simply be suspended with ropes. However, he alleged that police, administration and municipal officials later arrived and directed the organisers to dismantle the structure.
“Is this a democratic state?” Roy Barman questioned, claiming that officials had spoken to the organisers the previous day without raising objections.
The Congress leader alleged that the administration adopts different standards for programmes organised by the ruling party. Referring to an earlier football-viewing event involving the Chief Minister, he questioned why roads and public spaces could be used on such occasions while the Congress was being stopped from conducting its programme.
Roy Barman also alleged that a bulldozer was being brought to remove the temporary structure. Calling it “bulldozer politics”, he demanded to know under which provision of law the arrangement was prohibited.
“We will hold our programme here. File a case, arrest us or do whatever you want,” he asserted.
