Sudip Roy Barman slams police over slow investigation in Udaipur teacher’s death

Agartala, 13th August 2024:  The tragic death of English teacher Abhijit Dey has ignited widespread outrage across the state, with social media platforms flooded with demands for justice. Abhijit, a resident of Udaipur’s Poultry Road area succumbed to injuries sustained from a brutal assault by the family of one of his female students. Despite his transfer to GB Hospital in Agartala, Abhijit passed away.

The incident has placed intense pressure on local law enforcement, with even the state’s Chief Minister and Finance Minister reportedly monitoring the situation closely. However, despite the public outcry and political attention, only one arrest has been made so far in connection with the case. This has led to widespread criticism of the police’s handling of the investigation.

Abhijit’s wife has alleged that there were more individuals involved in the attack on her husband. According to her, on the night of the incident, the girl’s family demanded a ransom of Rs 30 lakh from Abhijit. “This was not a simple altercation,” she stated. “It was a premeditated act, and more people are involved than the police have apprehended.”

In a show of solidarity and to demand swift action, Pradesh Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman visited Abhijit’s residence on Tuesday accompanied by District Congress President Titon Pal and other leaders and workers of the party. After speaking with Abhijit’s wife and gathering details of the incident, Barman expressed his dissatisfaction with the police’s investigation.

“Abhijit died as a result of this horrific incident, yet the police have only arrested one person so far,” Barman told reporters. “Why hasn’t there been a remand request? The police seem to be dragging their feet, and it’s unacceptable. They are under some kind of pressure, which is hampering the investigation.”

Sources within the police department revealed that the officer initially assigned to the case has been removed, with the second officer in command now taking over. However, this change has done little to allay concerns, with many questioning why the investigation is progressing so slowly.

The tension reached a boiling point when Congress workers, led by Titon Pal, surrounded the Udaipur Radha Kishorepur police station, demanding immediate arrests. Despite the presence of a large number of protesters, the station’s Officer-in-Charge and his deputy were notably absent. The Congress leaders met with another officer and issued a stark warning: if all the accused were not arrested within 24 hours, a 24-hour shutdown would be enforced across Udaipur.

The incident has cast a shadow over Udaipur Radha Kishorepur police station, with many questioning the integrity of the investigation. “Why is the police moving so slowly? There are many unanswered questions,” Barman remarked, further suggesting that the police might be acting under duress despite having previously been awarded the President’s colors.
