Agartala, January 19: Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced the launch of Road Safety Month, a campaign to raise awareness and prevent accidents in the state, at a meeting with the officials of his office on Friday. He said that the government is committed to ensuring road safety and has introduced new schemes to reduce accidents.

He said that Road Safety Month, which started from January 15 and will continue till February 14, will culminate in a state-wide observance of road safety on January 31. The program will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister at Agartala and will be attended by people’s representatives from all over the state. He said that the aim of the campaign is to educate the people about the causes and consequences of accidents and to seek their cooperation in controlling them.

He expressed concern over the high number of accidents in the state, which claim 200 to 250 lives every year. He said that the police, traffic department and line department should play a major role in awareness programs and enforcement of rules.

He also presented the Good Samaritan Award to Ajay Rang, an auto driver who saved the lives of two people by taking them to the hospital after an accident in Baikhora, Santirbazar sub-division. He gave him a cheque of Rs 5000 along with the award and praised his humanitarian work. He said that the government has taken initiatives to ensure that no one faces legal complications for helping accident victims.
