TCPCR panel seeks prompt action on rape of minor at Sonamura

Agartala, 12th June 2025:   A delegation from the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TCPCR) visited Sonamura to probe into the recent rape of a nine-year-old girl in the Barpathar area under Sonamura Police Station today.

The members of Commission Chameli Saha and Gautam Shil held a discussion with OC Jayanta Kumar Dey of Sonamura Police Station and urged the immediate arrest of the accused. Later, they visited the victim’s residence and spoke with the child’s grandmother assuring her of all necessary aid and support.

The rape incident took place in Ward No. 5 of the Urmai Gram Panchayat, where the child who had lost both her parents was allegedly raped by her grandfather, 75-years old Sahid Mia. Following the shocking disclosure, the victim’s grandmother filed a formal complaint with the police.

Since the incident came to light, the accused has reportedly been absconding. Police have launched a manhunt to search and arrest him.

Speaking to the media, Commission member Chameli Saha stressed the need for rapid and strict action, assuring that the Commission will closely monitor the progress of the investigation to ensure justice is delivered.
