Agartala, 15th December 2025:   The tea sector in Tripura is set to receive a significant boost with the state’s own tea auction centre likely to become operational from the next financial year. Most of the work, including infrastructure development, has been completed.

Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC), Samir Ranjan Ghosh, stated today that all essential infrastructure for the auction centre is in place and the facility is expected to start functioning soon.

Addressing a press conference, Ghosh said the current state government has undertaken several key initiatives to strengthen the tea industry, with the establishment of the tea auction centre being one of the most important measures. He noted that once the centre becomes operational, tea growers in Tripura will be able to sell their produce through a transparent auction system, ensuring better price realisation.

At present, tea produced in Tripura is sent to auction centres in Assam and West Bengal. Due to the large volume of tea available in those markets, growers from Tripura often do not receive fair prices despite producing quality tea. The local auction centre is expected to reduce transportation costs and shorten the time required for marketing tea, directly benefiting growers.

Ghosh also remarked that the tea industry in Tripura had remained neglected for many years. However, since the formation of the present government in 2018, the sector has shown steady progress as a result of focused policies and initiatives.

To further promote Tripura tea, the TTDC, in collaboration with the Tea Board of India, organizes the annual ‘Run for Tea’ event to raise awareness about the quality of tea produced in the state. This year’s event will be held on December 17, beginning at 6:30 am from the TTDC office.

The run will be flagged off by Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy, Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, along with chairpersons of various public sector undertakings and other dignitaries. A 3-kilometre run has been planned, and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers. The event is open to participants from all sections of society.
