Agartala, 20th June 2025:  In a major relief for the tea plantation workforce, the Tripura government has announced a 16% hike in the wages of tea garden workers. Labour Minister Tinku Roy made the announcement during a press conference on Friday, stating that the daily wage for adult workers has been increased from 176 to 204, while minor workers will now earn 102 per day, up from 88.

The minister recalled that the last revision was made in January 2018, when wages were increased from 105 to 176 for adult workers and from 52.50 to 88 for minors.

“In response to long-standing demands for a wage revision, the state government recently constituted a 10-member committee headed by Swapna Das Pal, MLA of the 46-Surma Assembly Constituency,” Roy said. “The committee, with a tenure of six months, was tasked with thoroughly examining the wage structure of tea garden workers in the state.”

The committee held a meeting on May 28, chaired by Swapna Das Pal, to deliberate on the issue. After careful assessment, it recommended a 16% increase in wages, which the state government has now approved.

Highlighting the government’s broader welfare initiatives, Minister Roy noted that significant efforts have been made to improve the living standards of tea garden workers.

“Unlike earlier times when workers had to fend for themselves, we are now bringing them under key welfare schemes,” he said. “Under PM Awas Yojana and other initiatives, essential facilities like housing, electricity, water, sanitation, and ration cards are being extended to workers.”

So far, 6,595 tea garden worker families have benefited from government schemes, he added. Of these, 3,166 families have received land pattas in the past six years, while the remaining will be covered shortly. Additionally, 4,922 families have been issued priority group ration cards.

“This is a government committed to the welfare of our working class,” Roy concluded.
