Agartala, 8th June 2025: In a shocking incident, a 17-year-old girl named Sahena Begum and her father Manik Mia were brutally assaulted early today morning while attempting to collect drinking water from a public point near their home in Baghaiyachar village under Nirbhaypur Gram Panchayat in Kathalia block.
According to the victims, the assault occurred around 7 AM when Sahena had gone with a pitcher to collect water. Her father Manik Mia, who accompanied her, was suddenly attacked by a man identified as Rahman Mia (35), a resident of the same village. Without provocation, Rahman allegedly assaulted Manik with a stick, severely injuring his legs and back. When Sahena attempted to intervene, she too was attacked and beaten.
Eyewitnesses reported that a second teenage girl, 17-year-old Sumi Akhter—believed to be Sahena’s sister—also sustained serious injuries on her right hand while trying to protect her family. Villagers were left stunned at the brutality of the attack. As bystanders rushed to the scene, Rahman Mia reportedly fled.
The injured were immediately taken to Kathalia Hospital for primary treatment. Later, Manik Mia, along with his daughter, filed a formal complaint at Jatrapur Police Station, urging authorities to take swift and strict action against the assailant.
Manik Mia, a dedicated DOM worker at the Kathalia Social Health Centre for the past 19 years, supports his family of four through this job. The family is now living in fear and distress following the attack.
Locals confirmed that while Rahman Mia currently resides in Baghaiyachar, his ancestral home is in the Chorai Bari area on the Assam-Tripura border. The motive behind the assault is still unclear, though it appears to be linked to a longstanding dispute over access to water sources.
Police have acknowledged receipt of the complaint, and an investigation is reportedly underway. Villagers are demanding justice and security in the wake of the attack.
