Teenage girl commits suicide after mother’s scolding at Sonamura

Agartala, 2nd January 2024 :  A 17-year-old girl named Ferdousi Akter took her own life by consuming weedkiller after her mother scolded her for talking to a boy on the phone. The tragic incident took place on Sunday night at Sonamura.

According to the police, the girl was chatting with a boy on her mobile phone when her mother called her and rebuked her. Upset by her mother’s words, the girl drank the weedkiller and started shaking. Her family members rushed her to Sonamura Hospital, where she was referred to Melaghar Hospital.

The doctors at Melaghar Hospital found her condition to be critical and shifted her to TMC and Dr BRAM Teaching Hospital. However, as her condition deteriorated further, she was sent to GB Hospital in Agartala. She succumbed to the poison on Monday while undergoing treatment.

The girl’s body was handed over to her family after post-mortem on Tuesday. The family was inconsolable and demanded justice for their daughter. The girl was a student of class XI and had a bright future ahead of her.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the matter. They have also seized the girl’s mobile phone and are trying to contact the boy she was talking to. They have appealed to the public to be vigilant and prevent such incidents from happening.
