Agartala, 10th September 2026 : A theft at the traditional Sri Sri Shib-Kali Temple in Rautkhala, Bishalgarh, on the day of its annual Kali Puja has triggered anger among local residents and devotees.
According to local sources, a grand Kali Puja is organised at the temple every year on the new moon day (Amavasya) of Bhadra. Devotees arriving at the temple on Thursday morning reportedly discovered that thieves had broken in during the night, smashed the donation box and fled with cash and other valuables.
Following the discovery, a large number of residents and devotees gathered at the temple premises and informed Bishalgarh Police Station. However, some locals expressed dissatisfaction with the police response, alleging that no proper investigation or security arrangement was immediately undertaken. They claimed that the temple committee was instead advised to make its own arrangements to guard the premises.
Residents alleged that theft incidents have increased across the Bishalgarh subdivision and claimed that some crimes are linked to substance abuse. They said temples, mosques, educational institutions and commercial establishments are increasingly being targeted for money.
Locals further alleged that even after arrests, accused persons often obtain bail and allegedly return to similar activities, contributing to growing insecurity among residents.
The locals have demanded the immediate identification and arrest of those responsible for the temple theft, along with increased police surveillance across the Bishalgarh subdivision to check theft and substance abuse.
