Agartala, 22nd June 2025:  Churaibari area in North Tripura is witnessing unrest after a local BJP mandal member allegedly issued death threats to two party workers for exposing drug trade links. A case has been filed against the accused Shankar Sahani, a member of 54-Kadamtala-Kurti BJP mandal with Churaibari police station.

The controversy erupted following a major drug bust on June 15, when Churaibari police intercepted a consignment of 80,000 Yaba tablets being smuggled into Tripura from Assam. The accused 24-year-old Sanjay Sahani, son of Sudhan Sahani and a resident of East Phulbari Ward No. 4 was arrested under the NDPS Act. He is currently in custody.

Sources indicate that Sanjay’s cousin, Shankar Sahani, reacted furiously after learning that two BJP booth-level leaders, Rahul Datta (44), president of Booth No. 49 and Soumen Goswami, former president of Booth No. 48 had tipped off the police about Sanjay’s alleged drug activities. In retaliation, Shankar reportedly issued open death threats to both men in broad daylight.

Today at around 8 PM, Rahul and Soumen lodged a formal complaint at Churaibari police station. More than 100 concerned locals, led by Friends Club president Soumen Goswami, assembled at the police station demanding immediate action. Officer-in-Charge Khokan Saha assured them that “a full investigation will be carried out, and legal steps will follow.”

The incident has raised serious questions about political shelter being extended to criminal networks, even as Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha reiterates his commitment to a “Nesha Mukt Tripura” (drug-free Tripura).

Local residents are alarmed and demand swift action. “If those exposing drug networks are threatened, where is the safety for common people?” asked a protester.
