Tension at Joypur over drain blockage near soil treatment plant

Agartala, 2nd January 2026:   Construction of a soil treatment plant in Joypur has sparked unrest among residents, not over the project itself, but due to alleged obstruction of a crucial drainage channel adjacent to the site.

Local sources informed that the drain flows through Joypur towards Bangladesh. Each year, it is temporarily blocked on the Bangladesh side for agricultural purposes, causing water to back up during the monsoon. As a result, nearly 500 families in Joypur and neighboring Rajnagar routinely face flooding inside their homes—a hardship they have endured for years.

Residents now allege that a private housing construction company, involved in building the plant, has worsened the situation by filling up nearly 90 percent of the drain. With the water outlet almost sealed, locals fear that future flooding could become far more severe.

Community members claim they raised objections twice, but the company continued construction without addressing their concerns. Frustrated, residents united on Thursday to halt all work at the soil treatment plant.

Their demand is clear: the drain must first be fully restored and made functional before construction resumes. They have warned of intensifying protests if their demands are ignored.

The incident has triggered tension across the area. Locals now await a response from the administration, hoping for swift intervention and a lasting solution to the drainage crisis.
