Agartala, 3rd October 2025 : A disturbing incident took place late last night near the Gabtali Uttarpara Durga Puja pandal under Amtali police station, raising serious concerns about public safety and political impunity in the state.
Locals informed that, Dipen Sarkar, nephew of the sitting MLA of Kamalasagar assembly constituency and owner of a furniture store in Fultali Bazaar allegedly vandalized a roadside food stall operated by Surya Sarkar, a daily wage laborer from Gabtali. The altercation reportedly began after Dipen consumed food from the stall and refused to pay. When confronted, he allegedly launched a drunken assault on the stall owner, destroying the setup and threatening bystanders, claiming immunity due to his political connections.
Surya Sarkar, who had set up the modest stall during the Durga Puja festivities to support his struggling family, suffered significant financial losses. Locals say Sarkar’s family lives in dire poverty, and the stall was his only source of income during the festive season.
The situation escalated quickly as enraged residents gathered and retaliated against Dipen Sarkar, resulting in a public scuffle. Despite the backlash, locals claim that such incidents involving relatives of political figures are becoming increasingly common, with perpetrators often evading legal consequences due to their connections.
