Agartala, 9th January 2026: The judicial fraternity in South Tripura’s Sabroom has been rocked by allegations of misconduct and threats against a lawyer by an executive magistrate. The Sabroom Bar Association has announced a boycott of all case and document-related work at the Sabroom SDM Court starting January 12 demanding legal action against the accused Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Abhijit Singh Yadav (IAS).
The incident reportedly occurred on January 7 during the hearing of a case under Section 126 of the BNSS. Ratan Nath, the complainant lawyer and vice-president of the Bar Association, alleged that the magistrate misbehaved with him in court and openly threatened to kill him. Nath has since lodged a written FIR at Sabroom police station and submitted formal complaints to the District Magistrate and the state’s Chief Secretary, seeking impartial investigation and justice.
Today, Bar Association president Sudhan Majumder and secretary Apan Dutta convened an emergency meeting, declaring that lawyers will abstain from all work in the SDM’s court until a fair probe is conducted. The incident has sparked widespread anger among lawyers across the state, raising serious questions about the role of the administration in ensuring judicial accountability.
