Agartala, 27th March 2025: Unrest broke out along the Motinagar border under Amtali police station today as a team comprising the senior manager of the Sekerkote Electricity Department, police personnel and BSF jawans from Rayermura Camp arrived near Gate No. 98 at Kamalasagar Motinagar to disconnect electricity supply to 90 families residing in the area. The action sparked strong protests from the locals, escalating tensions.
Local residents voiced their grievances, stating, “We have been living here for years, and there is ample space in this area. If the electricity had to be disconnected, proper notice should have been issued beforehand, and permanent arrangements made for us. Instead, the administration suddenly came without any prior notice, which is completely unacceptable.”
However, authorities countered these claims, asserting that notices were served multiple times previously, instructing the families to vacate what they described as “illegal settlements.” A government official remarked, “Despite repeated notifications, these families failed to relocate. The disconnection of electricity is a necessary measure.”
Locals also argued that the timing of the action was insensitive, given that it coincided with the conclusion of Ramadan. “Discussions and compromises should have been sought, especially during such a significant time for us,” shared one of the protesters. It was noted that prior warnings were issued under the leadership of Governor Indra Senadi, urging residents to move beyond the barbed wire fencing. Officials confirmed the move was initiated following directives from the Union Home Ministry.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, residents expressed concerns that the decision was influenced by recent security incidents. One of them alleged, “This step might be linked to the recovery of narcotics, firearms, and Yaba tablets in Motinagar. However, most of us here have substantial assets and businesses that we don’t want to lose.”
