Agartala, 7th July 2026: A theft at Tilabazar Islamia Fazil (HS+2) Madrasa in Tilagaon Gram Panchayat of Unakoti district has triggered widespread tension, with protests, a confrontation between rival groups, and the alleged poisoning of a hostel student intensifying the situation.
According to reports, several items, including ceiling fans and Sintex water tanks, were allegedly stolen from the Madrasa. Demanding a proper investigation and the arrest of those responsible, members of the “Madrasa Reform Movement Committee” staged a sit-in protest on Monday, keeping the institution closed and raising slogans.
The situation became tense when Youth Congress activists and supporters arrived at the spot, leading to a heated verbal exchange with the protesters. Police personnel from Irani Police Station, led by DCM Mati Ranjan Debbarma, intervened promptly and prevented the confrontation from escalating into a clash.
Later that night, the incident took another dramatic turn after a hostel student allegedly consumed poison. The student was first admitted to Bhagwannagar District Hospital before being referred for advanced treatment. Family members reportedly shifted him to Silchar. While speculation has grown over a possible connection between the theft, the day’s unrest, and the student’s action, no official confirmation has been made.
Acting District Education Officer Rajesh Debbarma visited the Madrasa and said the alleged theft occurred at night, with a student reportedly witnessing the culprits and being threatened. He expressed concern that the Madrasa authorities had not lodged a police complaint despite being aware of the incident.
The officer also criticised the poor condition of the hostel, directing the Headmaster to improve cleanliness and ensure students face no inconvenience. He further said a show-cause notice would be issued over allegations that the hostel in-charge remained absent at night.
Although the administration has restored order, the incident continues to raise several unanswered questions, and the investigation is underway.
