Thief escapes despite chase, security concerns at Human Rights Commission office

Date:

Agartala, 9th October 2026 :   A suspected thief allegedly attempting to steal air-conditioner wiring escaped despite being chased by security personnel at the Tripura Human Rights Commission office near VIP Road in Agartala, raising concerns over the security arrangements at the premises.

According to security guards posted at the office, the incident came to light when they suddenly noticed a suspicious person attempting to flee after approaching the premises. The guards immediately alerted the concerned officials, and security personnel rushed after the suspect. However, the person reportedly managed to jump over a boundary wall and escape before he could be apprehended.

Speaking about the incident, a security guard said they had immediately rushed towards the rear side of the premises after noticing the suspect. Despite pursuing him closely, they failed to catch him. The guards suspect that the person had entered the premises with the intention of cutting and stealing the air-conditioner wires.

Another guard said the suspect appeared suddenly and ran away shortly afterwards. The matter was immediately reported to the concerned officials, who informed the police. Police personnel subsequently visited the location, according to the guards.

The security personnel also claimed that similar incidents had occurred at the premises on two previous occasions. They said suspected thieves had repeatedly targeted the air-conditioner wiring, although the earlier attempts reportedly did not result in the successful removal of the wires.

The incident has brought attention to the vulnerability of the office premises, particularly during nighttime hours. According to the guards, no office staff members remain inside the building at night. Although police patrols occasionally cover the area, repeated attempts to target the premises have raised questions about whether the existing security arrangements are sufficient to prevent further incidents.

The police have been informed about the latest incident. However, it was not immediately clear whether a formal complaint had been registered or whether any suspect had been identified in connection with the attempted theft.
