Agartala, 21st April 2025:   Thieves broke into Bholanath Jeweller’s shop located directly opposite Bishalgarh police station early this morning exposing glaring vulnerabilities in local security measures.

The incident captured on CCTV footage took place at around 4:30 am. The criminals forced open the back door to gain entry and attempted to access the shop’s locker. Although they failed to break into the locker, they managed to steal items worth Rs 30,000 including cash from the cash box. However, despite the proximity to the police station, authorities have been unable to identify the culprits.

Bishnu Debnath, the owner of Bholanath Jeweller’s, expressed frustration over the incident saying, “It is shocking that a theft could took place right under the nose of the police. How can anyone feel safe in the Bishalgarh market?” He also noted that despite the police station’s full view of the shop, officers seemed unaware of the crime.

Adding to the outrage, the CCTV cameras installed near Bishalgarh police station and Bishalgarh women’s police station were found to be non-functional raising concerns over maintenance and the effectiveness of security infrastructure in the area. Market traders voiced their grievances, alleging negligence on the part of the police.

The president of the Bishalgarh Merchants Association Babul Saha, who visited the scene stated, “This isn’t just about one shop—it’s about the entire market’s safety. If the police can’t protect us, who will?” Secretary Babul Debnath echoed similar sentiments, urging immediate action to prevent future incidents.

Meanwhile, comparisons were drawn with the efficiency of police forces in other states. Reports surfaced of Tamil Nadu police successfully apprehending a thief from Tripura for a theft in Chennai just days back. Traders argued that the stark contrast in performance highlighted the shortcomings of local authorities.

Despite the presence of night guards in the Bishalgarh market, thefts have continued to plague businesses, leaving many to question the reliability of existing security measures. Under pressure from traders, Bishalgarh police have initiated efforts to identify the thief, but skepticism remains high.

“We demand accountability and real action,” said a frustrated trader, adding that trust in the authorities had eroded significantly. As investigations continue, Bishalgarh market traders remain apprehensive about their safety and security.
