Agartala, 20th November 2025: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the tragic death of seven-year-old Dipanwita Paul, a Class II student of Kshudiram Basu English Medium School, allegedly caused by gross negligence on the part of the school authorities. The Commission has issued a notice to the Director of School Education, seeking a detailed response by December 26.
According to an order issued by THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh, students were made to stand for a prolonged period under the blazing sun during an event organized to observe the Vande Bharat programme. Despite complaining repeatedly of feeling unwell, Dipanwita was reportedly compelled to remain in line. While teachers protected themselves from the heat by covering their heads, they allegedly did not extend the same consideration to the children.
Dipanwita collapsed during the event and was rushed to GB Hospital, where she battled for life for eleven days before passing away on Tuesday. Her father, Debashish Paul—a resident of Jogendranagar’s Vidyasagar area and an auto driver—alleged that the school authorities showed complete indifference to their child’s suffering and did not visit the hospital even once. Dipanwita was the couple’s only child.
Taking strong note of the incident, the Commission termed it a serious violation of children’s human rights, pointing to the denial of basic care and humane treatment. The THRC has sought a comprehensive report from the Director of School Education regarding the incident and any action taken so far.
The Commission has directed that the report be submitted within fifteen days of receiving the order. The matter is scheduled for its next hearing on December 26, 2025.
