Three officers suspended over drug diversion allegations

Date:

Agartala, 24th May 2026:  A storm has erupted within the Teliamura police force after three officers were accused of diverting a massive consignment of seized cough syrup into the black market. District Superintendent of Police K.B. Jagadeeswar Reddy moved quickly, ordering the suspension of Inspector Ajit Debbarma, Sub-Inspector Rajendra Reang, and Constable Sukanta Deb, while a departmental inquiry has been launched.

It is reported that the controversy stems from an anti-narcotics operation conducted late at night on May 20. Police claimed to have recovered 600 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup from a suspicious vehicle. However, sources allege the actual haul was closer to 6,000 bottles. Thousands were allegedly handed back to traffickers, while several hundred were sold illegally.

The revelations have reignited public concern about the role of Teliamura police in drug trafficking, particularly given past controversies over narcotics seizures in the region. With codeine-based cough syrups banned due to rampant abuse among youth in Tripura and neighboring Bangladesh, the case has drawn sharp scrutiny and raised troubling questions about police complicity in the drug trade.
