Thunderstorms, gusty winds likely across Tripura till May 29

Date:

Agartala, 24th May 2026:  The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Meteorological Centre Agartala, has forecast widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning activity across Tripura over the next seven days, with heavy rain alerts issued for several districts beginning May 24.

According to the weather bulletin released on Sunday evening at 7:30 PM, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thundershowers is likely to occur at many places across the state during the forecast period. The department has predicted heavy rainfall measuring between 7 cm and 11 cm in North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, Khowai and West Tripura districts during the initial two days.

The IMD further stated that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected at isolated locations across all districts on May 24 and 25. Thunderstorm and lightning activity is likely to persist till May 29.

Rainfall activity is expected to continue on May 29 and 30, with light to moderate showers and thundershowers forecast in several parts of the state.

The weather office also indicated that maximum temperatures across Tripura are likely to stay 2 to 4 degrees Celsius above normal over the next three to four days, while minimum temperatures are expected to remain near normal levels.

Issuing an advisory, the IMD warned that thunderstorms and strong winds could damage standing crops, plantations and horticultural produce. Banana and papaya plantations may particularly face the risk of uprooting, while power and communication lines and vulnerable kutcha houses may also suffer damage.

The department cautioned that heavy rainfall may lead to waterlogging in low-lying urban areas, slippery roads, temporary road blockages, minor landslides and disruption of essential civic services such as electricity and water supply.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering under trees and keep away from water bodies and electric conductors during lightning activity. Farmers have also been urged to suspend agricultural operations during severe weather conditions.
