Agartala, 21st August 2026 : The Tripura Labour Department has launched the ‘Digital Labour Chowk’ app, seeking to create a direct link between construction workers and those looking to hire labourers, while also making welfare benefits more accessible.
Labour Minister Tinku Roy launched the app at a programme held at the Labour Department’s conference hall in Agartala. He said the initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen implementation of the Construction Workers’ Welfare Scheme and establish designated Labour Chowks across the state.
According to Roy, construction workers will be able to register themselves through the app and create profiles containing details of their skills and the type of work they undertake. Employers, in turn, will be able to search for and contact workers through their mobile phones.
“The app has been developed to provide workers with a simple and convenient system,” Roy said.
The minister said the government is also working to establish physical Labour Chowks where workers can wait for employment in a safer and more comfortable environment. These facilities are planned to include seating sheds, toilets and washrooms, protecting workers from heat and rain.
Roy said workers in areas such as Battala often sit under trees while waiting for prospective employers. The proposed Labour Chowks, he said, would provide them with designated spaces from where employers could hire labourers.
He said work on a Labour Chowk has already begun in Udaipur, while land has been identified in Unakoti district for another facility. The department will also identify a suitable site in Battala and develop a Labour Chowk there.
“The online facility is available to everyone. Workers can upload the app on their mobile phones and avail themselves of the benefits,” Roy said.
He added that Labour Chowks would be established at different locations in phases, while a review meeting with Labour Department inspectors and district officials would assess the implementation of existing welfare schemes and ways to ensure workers receive benefits more quickly.
