Agartala, 3rd September 2026 : With negotiations over a proposed alliance entering a crucial stage, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has left for New Delhi for talks on the party’s demands and the pending issues linked to the tripartite agreement.
Debbarma said he had been summoned to Delhi by “Maharaj” and that a meeting was expected to take place on Friday. He is travelling along with a Tipra Motha minister, while party supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma is also expected to be in the national capital.
Speaking before his departure, Ranjit Debbarma said the meeting would focus primarily on the constitutional and political rights of the Tiprasa people, including the proposed expansion of the powers of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
According to him, the party had already placed its demands before the government during earlier rounds of negotiations. The issue of a Vigilance Committee had also been discussed previously, and the party has now received indications that the Chief Minister is prepared to hold further discussions on these matters.
Debbarma made it clear that securing the rights of the Tiprasa people remains the foundation of Tipra Motha’s decision to enter into an alliance.
“We have entered into this alliance precisely because we want to secure our constitutional rights,” he said.
On reports of a possible 70:30 seat-sharing arrangement, Debbarma dismissed the speculation, saying negotiations had not yet reached that stage.
“First, we need to understand their position on our rights. Only after that can anything move forward,” he said.
He added that whatever is eventually agreed upon at the negotiating table would be disclosed publicly.
At the same time, Tipra Motha has begun preparations for the upcoming Village Committee elections. Debbarma said nomination papers had started being issued and that the party’s election committee had already been constituted. The party has also authorised its MLAs and MDCs to issue nomination papers.
Regarding the Central Government’s participation, Debbarma said he could not confirm who would represent it, but indicated that a high-level meeting was likely to discuss both the Village Committee elections and the proposed alliance.
He also said Chief Minister Manik Saha was expected to travel to Delhi.
Reiterating the party’s position, Debbarma said Tipra Motha would not proceed with an alliance unless the rights of the Tiprasa people were addressed.
“These are constitutional rights. We are not asking for charity; we are demanding what is rightfully ours,” he said, pointing to the constitutional protections enjoyed by communities such as the Karbis, Bodos and Dimasas.
With the Village Committee elections approaching, the Delhi meeting is expected to play an important role in determining whether the remaining differences between the parties can be resolved and whether the proposed alliance can move forward.
