TPCC Demands Restoration of Gandhi’s Name in Rural Employment Scheme, Increase in Wages

Agartala, 13th December 2025:   The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has strongly criticized the renaming of the rural employment scheme, which has resulted in the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name.

In a statement, the TPCC alleged that the move is part of a broader political agenda by the RSS-BJP leadership to erase the contributions of India’s freedom struggle and national leaders, while glorifying Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The statement highlighted that despite the scheme’s historical importance in supporting rural livelihoods, successive budget allocations under the Modi government have been steadily declining.

The press statement said according to parliamentary data cited by the TPCC, the allocation for the scheme has decreased from Rs 1,11,171 crore in 2020–21 to Rs 85,839 crore in 2024–25. As a result, the average number of workdays under the scheme has dropped to 32–34 days in Tripura, far below the promised 200 days, and Rs 9,200 crore of pending wages remain unpaid.

The TPCC called for the restoration of Mahatma Gandhi’s name in the scheme, reinstatement of all eligible workers removed from digital records, provision of at least 200 days of work annually, a minimum daily wage of Rs 500 in the state, and timely payment of wages to workers, including those residing near the state’s borders.

The Congress leaders emphasized that mere renaming of the scheme without addressing these critical issues will not benefit the country’s rural population and termed it a continuation of the government’s “misleading and deceptive practices.”
