Agartala, October 20:  In a shocking turn of events, an altercation unfolded at Choumuhani Bazar on Friday at around eleven o’clock, as Kamalpur Durga reportedly assaulted cloth merchant Jiten Das for his refusal to comply with a demanded Durga Puja subscription.

The dispute escalated, resulting in chaos and disruption in the market area. Harkumar Das, the proprietor of a local cloth shop, approached Jiten Das, seeking a 2000 rupees contribution for the upcoming Durga Puja festivities. In response, Das proposed a payment of 1500 rupees, leading to a heated disagreement. Matters took a violent turn when Jiten Das allegedly threatened to forcibly retrieve the demanded sum. In a bid to defend his stance, Harkumar Das resorted to physical force, leading to a scuffle. During the altercation, merchandise from the shop was thrown onto the streets, further escalating the situation. Following the incident, Har Kumar Das promptly filed a complaint against Jiten at the local police station, seeking appropriate legal action.

In light of the incident, the Chief Minister has issued a directive to the police administration, emphasizing the imperative of taking stringent action against individuals involved in extortionate practices. The current government stands resolutely against the perpetuation of such cultural norms and has vowed to eradicate this menace from society.
