Agartala, 2nd April 2026: Increasing traffic pressure coupled with dilapidated infrastructure has left traffic police at Kalyanpur struggling to perform their duties under life-threatening conditions. The most alarming concern is the rundown traffic post near Kalyanpur Motor Stand, which has become a symbol of neglect.
Local sources report that the post, built many years ago, is now in a state of near collapse. Rusted iron frames have weakened, tin roofs are falling apart, and rainwater seeps inside during storms. Despite the danger, police officers continue to work there daily, with fears of a major accident looming large.
The Kalyanpur Motor Stand area remains one of the busiest points in the city, with thousands of passengers and vehicles passing through from morning till evening. Managing traffic flow is already a challenge, but the absence of modern equipment and safety measures makes the task even harder. Officers are often seen standing in scorching heat or heavy rain to regulate vehicles.
One traffic officer, speaking anonymously, said: “Our job is to ensure public safety, but our own safety is constantly compromised. The post could collapse at any moment.”
Local traders and commuters echoed similar concerns, urging authorities to act swiftly. They stressed the need for a new traffic post equipped with modern facilities to protect both officers and the public.
Experts emphasize that safe and modern infrastructure at key traffic points is essential. Advanced traffic signals, CCTV surveillance, and secure posts would not only reduce accident risks but also ease the workload of officers.
Meanwhile, Inspector Ashish Sarkar of Kalyanpur Police Station confirmed that construction work on the national highway passing through the Motor Stand will begin soon. As a result, the traffic post will be relocated within days.
However, residents argue that accidents do not wait for schedules. Civic groups insist that immediate action is necessary to prevent potential tragedies.
