Agartala, 6th June 2024 : In a tragic incident that has shaken the community of Teliamura, a 25-year-old housewife named Suparna Sarkar succumbed to injuries after being allegedly set on fire by her in-laws. Suparna passed away on Thursday morning at GB Hospital, following a mysterious fire incident at her marital home in the Bandar Chowmuhani area.

Family members of the deceased have accused her husband, Prabal Sarkar, a private school teacher, and his family of continuous physical and mental abuse since their marriage three years ago. Despite the birth of their child two years prior, it is claimed that the torment did not cease.

“Suparna was a loving mother and a dutiful wife. She endured the abuse for the sake of her child’s future,” stated a relative of Suparna. The family alleges that the in-laws’ demands for dowry were incessant, leading to an escalation of violence.

On May 21, Suparna was critically injured in a fire at her in-laws’ residence. After initial treatment at Teliamura sub-district hospital, she was referred to GB Hospital, where she ultimately lost her battle for life.

In a heart-wrenching statement, Suparna’s mother recounted the ordeal her daughter faced, “She was constantly harassed for dowry. They didn’t just take my daughter’s dignity; they took her life.”

The family has demanded justice, calling for stringent punishment for the perpetrators. “We want the law to take its course and ensure that no other daughter suffers the same fate as Suparna,” declared Suparna’s father.

The case has garnered significant attention, with local authorities stepping in to investigate the allegations. “We have arrested the accused husband and are conducting a thorough investigation,” confirmed an official from Teliamura police station.

As the community mourns the loss of Suparna Sarkar, the spotlight turns to the issue of dowry-related violence, a persistent social evil that continues to claim lives. The tragic demise of Suparna has reignited the conversation on the need for stronger measures to protect women from such heinous acts.

The story of Suparna Sarkar is a stark reminder of the dangers that many women face within the confines of their own homes. It is a call to action for society to stand against domestic violence and dowry harassment, ensuring justice and safety for all.
