Agartala, 23rd September 2026 : Residents of Bejimara Wards 3 and 4 blocked the Sonamura–Kathalia road on Wednesday, protesting the prolonged failure of an electricity transformer in their locality.
According to the residents, the transformer has remained faulty for nearly a year, forcing them to depend on temporary arrangements to keep the power supply running. Despite repeatedly informing the concerned departments, no permanent solution has been provided, they alleged.
The road blockade began around 10 am on Wednesday and continued for nearly an hour. The protest caused inconvenience to office-goers, pedestrians, school students and relatives accompanying patients.
Speaking to the media, residents further alleged that the voltage supply in the area has remained extremely low for the past six months. As a result, household appliances, including lights and fans, often fail to function properly. They said they had repeatedly informed electricity department officials about the problem, but the situation remained unresolved.
Later, Sonamura Nagar Panchayat Vice-Chairman Shahjahan Mia reached the spot and assured the protesters that the transformer would be repaired or replaced within a day.
Following the assurance, the residents withdrew the blockade and restored traffic movement.
Speaking to the media, Shahjahan Mia said the transformer would be installed by Thursday. He acknowledged that residents had raised the issue earlier as well, but the problem had not been resolved. He said he had personally taken responsibility for ensuring that the matter was addressed.
Residents, meanwhile, said they would wait until Thursday to see whether the assurance is actually implemented.
