Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury calls for teamwork as vehicle count doubles, road accidents fall 13%

Date:

Agartala, 14th July 2026 : Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Tuesday stressed the need for close coordination between the Transport Department, police, district administration and other stakeholders to strengthen road safety and ensure effective implementation of government initiatives.

Addressing a road safety sensitisation seminar, the minister described the gathering of police personnel, transport officials and experts on a common platform as a rare and significant occasion. He said the seminar should not remain limited to knowledge-sharing but must translate into practical action on the ground.

Highlighting the rapid expansion of the transport sector, Chowdhury said the number of registered vehicles in Tripura has more than doubled from around 4 lakh five years ago to over 8 lakh, increasing traffic congestion and the need for stronger enforcement. Despite this, he noted that coordinated efforts by the Transport and Traffic Police departments have helped reduce road accidents by 13 percent through strict monitoring, surveillance and improved emergency response.

The minister urged wider awareness of the Centre’s Rahavir and PM Rahat schemes, under which accident victims can receive timely assistance and up to ₹1.5 lakh in cashless treatment. He said around 60 beneficiaries in Tripura have already availed the PM Rahat scheme and announced plans to organise district-level awareness programmes involving district magistrates, police, PRI representatives and the public.

Chowdhury also said the department generated over ₹160 crore in state revenue during the last financial year through a transparent and fully cashless system. Emphasising that road safety is a shared responsibility, he called upon officials, police, media and citizens to work together to reduce fatal accidents and save lives across the state.
