Tribal leader David Murasing’s controversial social media post sparks outrage, raises fears of communal tension in Tripura

Agartala, 7th August 2025:  A social media post by a leader of a ruling tribal political party in Tripura named David Mura Singh has triggered widespread concern over communal harmony in the state. Singh’s remarks posted Wednesday have been widely condemned for their provocative tone and potential to incite caste-based unrest.

In his post, Singh alleged that “Tiprasa youths never cast an evil eye on Bengali girls, but Bengali boys have been raping and killing Tiprasa girls every day.” He further accused the Bengali community of opposing tribal demands, interfering in tribal areas, and exploiting Tiprasa resources. “Who are the communalists?” he concluded, in a post that remains publicly visible more than 15 hours later.

The post has sparked outrage across social media platforms, with citizens and civil society groups calling for accountability. “If a common citizen had written this, they would’ve been arrested by now,” said Ranjit Das, a local activist. “This isn’t freedom of speech—it’s a direct attack on the peace and brotherhood Tripura stands for.”

Tripura, a state with approximately 30% tribal population and 20 tribal-reserved assembly seats, has long prided itself on its cultural coexistence. The current coalition government includes Singh’s party, raising questions about the silence from party leadership. No official statement or condemnation has been issued as of Thursday evening.

Political analysts warn that such rhetoric could destabilize the fragile social fabric of the state. “This kind of language from a government ally is deeply troubling,” said political commentator Ananya Roy. “It risks pushing Tripura toward communal polarization.”

Recent weeks have seen sporadic incidents of unrest and hooliganism in districts outside Agartala, further fueling public anxiety. Citizens are urging both Bengali and Tiprasa communities to reject divisive politics and reaffirm their commitment to peaceful coexistence.

As calls for Singh’s accountability grow louder, many are demanding that the government take swift action to preserve the state’s harmony. “Politics will come and go,” said local resident Prabir Nath, “but Bengalis and Tiprasas must live together. That’s the real future of Tripura.”
