Agartala, 8th October 2025 : Tension has gripped Kailashahar town following an alleged molestation attempt on a tribal college student in the Durgapur area under Ward No. 14 of Kailashahar Municipality. The accused, identified as Nirmal Bhattacharya, an employee of the local Forest department, has reportedly been absconding since the incident.
According to local sources, Bhattacharya had been renting out rooms in his house to students from various schools and colleges, including several tribal students from the Fatikroy assembly constituency area. On Tuesday morning, while one of the students was cleaning her room, Bhattacharya allegedly entered and made indecent advances toward her. When the girl resisted, he is said to have forcibly tried to molest her. The terrified student managed to flee and informed other tenants, who then alerted her family in Fatikraya.
The victim’s family first contacted the Fatikroy Police Station but were later directed to the Kailashahar Women’s Police Station, where they lodged a written complaint. Local leaders of the Tipra Motha party also visited the spot, demanding immediate police action. However, anger has erupted after it was alleged that even 24 hours later, the Women’s Police Station had not officially registered the case.
Fatikroy Block Tipra Motha President Biresh Debbarma said, “We want justice for the victim. Legal action should be taken immediately against the accused forest department employee. We hope the police will register the case today.”
Meanwhile, some locals claimed that Bhattacharya is mentally unstable and has been involved in similar incidents earlier, yet no strict administrative action was taken. Police sources said efforts are underway to trace and arrest the accused. The delay in registering the case has, however, sparked widespread outrage and questions among residents about whether government employees are being shielded.
The victim’s family has demanded, “Our daughter must get justice.”
