Agartala, 12th August 2026: Several NGO workers engaged in Anganwadi-related activities under the Tripura Social Welfare and Social Education Department on Wednesday alleged that they have been deprived of their salaries for nearly nine months.
The workers submitted a deputation to the Director of the Social Welfare and Social Education Department, demanding immediate payment of their outstanding salaries and resolution of various issues related to their employment.
According to the workers, several NGOs were given the opportunity to undertake Anganwadi-related work under the department in 2024. A number of workers subsequently joined and began performing their assigned duties. However, they alleged that salary-related problems started after a few months of work, and their payments have remained pending for nearly nine months.
Speaking to the media after submitting the deputation, the workers said the prolonged non-payment of salaries had caused severe financial hardship. They said it had become difficult to meet household expenses and other day-to-day needs despite continuing to perform their duties.
The workers also raised concerns over changes in educational qualification requirements. They claimed that no specific educational qualification had previously been required for the work and that many of them had been engaged in the activities for a considerable period.
However, they alleged that some workers were now being removed from their jobs on the grounds of educational qualifications.
The workers demanded that if any new educational qualification criteria had been introduced, the department should issue clear guidelines and communicate the future status of existing workers. They said removing experienced workers suddenly on the basis of newly introduced eligibility criteria would leave them in a state of uncertainty.
The deputationists urged the department to consider their grievances on humanitarian grounds and take immediate steps to clear the nine-month salary arrears while providing clarity on their employment status.
