Agartala, 5th February 2026 : The Tripura Bar Association has once again convened a meeting over the demand to remove the President of the West District Consumer Court. Lawyers unanimously resolved to continue their agitation until the demand is fulfilled.
The controversy centers around Judge Gautam Sarkar, who has been accused of repeatedly appearing in court under the influence of alcohol and even consuming liquor inside his chamber. Court staff allege that in such states, he has occasionally behaved inappropriately with employees. These incidents, reportedly ongoing for a long time, sparked outrage among staff and lawyers once they came to light.
In response, the Bar Association had earlier decided to boycott the court and submitted a written complaint to the minister, demanding immediate action.
At today’s meeting, lawyers reiterated their stance, declaring that the protest will continue until Sarkar is removed. One lawyer noted that the association had already resolved not to appear in court indefinitely and had given the government three days to respond. However, the demand for removal has not yet been met.
He further added that female lawyers are currently unwilling to enter the President’s chamber, underscoring the gravity of the situation. The association confirmed that the boycott and agitation will persist until the government takes decisive action.
