Agartala, 20th July 2025: Tripura BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharya on Sunday accused the opposition—particularly the CPI(M) and Congress—of spreading “false and misleading propaganda” against the rollout of smart electric meters in the state.
Speaking at a press conference alongside BJP general secretary Bipin Debbarma, Bhattacharya alleged that the opposition was attempting to confuse the public by misrepresenting the benefits of smart meters.
“This government is working with a people-first approach. The opposition’s campaign against smart meters is based on fake information. It is nothing but an attempt to stall development and mislead citizens. I strongly condemn it,” Bhattacharya said.
He clarified that the installation of smart meters aligns with the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020, which mandate smart meters for all electricity consumers. “These meters are aimed at empowering consumers — they ensure precise readings, increase accountability, and improve service quality,” he said.
Underscoring the government’s push for digital transformation, Bhattacharya noted, “We are introducing technology in every sector — from e-offices and smart classrooms to tech-enabled ration shops — to ensure transparency and prevent manipulation.”
He added that over 95,000 consumers in Tripura have already adopted smart meters and many have welcomed the change, citing benefits such as real-time consumption monitoring. “The central government has already initiated this drive across several states. Tripura is no exception. The opposition just cannot digest the pace of development,” he remarked.
Bhattacharya also used the opportunity to launch a broader attack on the CPI(M) and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, accusing them of presiding over a lawless regime. “Under Manik Sarkar’s leadership in 1998, within just 112 days, 118 people were murdered, 87 kidnapped, and 29 raped. These are not accusations — these are official figures,” he alleged.
Responding to Sarkar’s recent remarks accusing the BJP of failing to curb terrorism, Bhattacharya said, “It’s ironic that Sarkar is questioning us on law and order. The worst period of violence and terror was during his rule.”
