Tripura BJP steps up organisational preparations for ULB polls; candidate list awaits central leadership’s approval

Date:

Agartala, 1st November 2026 :  With the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections approaching, the Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday convened an organisational review meeting in Agartala to assess its election preparedness, strengthen coordination among party leaders and chalk out strategies for the upcoming civic polls. Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, meanwhile, made it clear that the BJP would not tolerate violence or any attempt to disrupt the democratic process.

The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, party in-charge Mrigananka Debbarma, general secretaries Chandan Debnath, Bipin Debbarma and Bhagaban Das, along with other senior party functionaries.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Chief Minister Saha said that several organisational issues would be discussed in detail, particularly those concerning preparations for the forthcoming elections. He also highlighted the role of party in-charge Mrigananka Debbarma in ensuring better coordination among the state leadership.

Commenting on the alleged incident at Khayerpur, where a Congress worker reportedly attempted to attack BJP workers late on Saturday evening, Saha said that he had received information about the matter and would discuss it further to establish the actual circumstances.

“If such an incident has indeed occurred, it is certainly a matter of concern. The matter needs to be properly investigated. We will not tolerate such incidents, and the law will take its own course,” the Chief Minister said.

He also referred to another reported incident in Kamalpur under Dhalai district, stating that such developments were unacceptable and that he would collect further information before commenting in detail.

Reaffirming the BJP’s stand on maintaining a peaceful electoral atmosphere, Saha said that violence in any form would not be accepted. He further claimed that party workers had been clearly instructed not to prevent opposition candidates or their supporters from submitting nomination papers.

“We have instructed our karyakartas not to obstruct anyone or create difficulties for candidates while filing their nominations. Anyone should be free to exercise their democratic rights,” he said, adding that the Opposition frequently makes allegations on such issues.

Meanwhile, BJP state president and MLA Abhishek Debroy termed Sunday’s gathering a regular organisational review meeting held as part of the party’s preparations for the upcoming ULB elections.

He said discussions would centre on organisational activities, election strategies and the party’s readiness for the civic polls. The selection of candidates was also among the matters expected to come up during the discussions, although the list had already been prepared, he indicated.

Debroy further clarified that the BJP would announce its candidates only after completing consultations with the central leadership. As a national party, he said, the final list would be made public after receiving the necessary approval from the party’s central leadership in New Delhi.
