Agartala, 1st November 2026 : With the November 27 Urban Local Body (ULB) elections approaching, the BJP and Tipra Motha Party have moved towards a joint electoral strategy in Tripura, agreeing to contest the civic polls together under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) banner.
The understanding was reached during a meeting between leaders of the two parties at the State Guest House on Sunday, where discussions focused on electoral coordination, alliance unity and the proposals put forward by Tipra Motha for the upcoming civic elections.
The development signals the ruling alliance’s efforts to strengthen its position in the urban electoral contest by bringing its partners together under a common banner. However, the specific terms of cooperation and other election-related arrangements are yet to be finalised.
Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, who chaired the meeting, said both sides had agreed on the broader decision to fight the elections unitedly under the NDA. He added that the proposals submitted by Tipra Motha would be examined further at the BJP’s party level before a final decision was taken.
The meeting was attended by BJP general secretary Bipin Debbarma, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma, Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma and MDC and former TTAADC Chief Executive Member Purna Chandra Jamatia, among other leaders.
Speaking to reporters, Nath said Tipra Motha leaders had earlier expressed their willingness to contest the ULB elections jointly, referring to the two parties’ united participation in the TTAADC Village Committee elections. Following discussions within the BJP, a meeting was convened to consider the proposal and work towards a common electoral approach.
Nath described Sunday’s discussions as constructive and said the alliance partners had agreed to fight the upcoming civic polls together. He, however, clarified that the BJP would deliberate on Tipra Motha’s specific proposals before arriving at a final decision, which was expected by Sunday night.
The November 27 elections are emerging as an important political test for the ruling alliance, with the BJP and its partners seeking to maintain their electoral momentum at the urban local body level. A coordinated campaign could help the NDA consolidate its support base and avoid a fragmented contest among its constituents.
