Agartala, 18th September 2025: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has strongly criticized the economic policies of the Modi-led government, claiming they are gradually pushing the country toward a severe economic crisis. The party highlighted that rising inflation, falling wages, growing unemployment, and increasing financial inequality have left large sections of the population in distress.
Citing PwC’s Voice of the Consumer 2025 report, the TPCC stated that 84% of Indians are struggling with rising food prices. Of these, 40% of families are unable to afford two meals a day, while 32% have seen a significant drop in income, forcing them to cut spending on essential goods. The savings rate of ordinary citizens has fallen below 1%, continuing a decade-long decline.
The party also warned that the withdrawal of nationalized banks from microfinance schemes has increased dependence on private lenders, leading to financial harassment. Loan recovery agencies have reportedly collected crores of rupees from the poor in just the first four months of the current financial year—a trend seen in Tripura as well.
Locally, the TPCC pointed out that over the past seven and a half years, unemployment has increased, teachers and other employees have been denied their dues, irregular workers remain unregularized, and many rural laborers have been removed from employment lists. REGA work has steadily declined, wages are being withheld, and rural employment opportunities have dwindled. The devastating floods of August 2024 further compounded financial distress, affecting half of the state’s population.
The party condemned recent hikes in electricity, CNG, PNG, property, drinking water, and other service taxes, which have added hardship for 19% of the population. They accused black-market hoarders, certain government officials, and sections of the ruling party of artificially inflating prices of rice, pulses, oil, sugar, vegetables, and fish ahead of Durga Puja, with increases ranging from 20 to 35 rupees per kilogram.
The TPCC also raised concerns over extortion under the guise of festival donations, which continue in Agartala and other areas despite warnings from the Chief Minister and the Director General of Police. In view of Durga Puja, the TPCC demanded that the state government:
Immediately pay pending wages to workers and agricultural laborers.
Ensure at least 10 days of work for rural laborers through government schemes.
Allocate festival-related ration items across the state.
Strictly control artificial price hikes of essential goods.
Take firm administrative action to stop organized exploitation across the state.
The party emphasized that urgent government intervention is needed to protect the interests of marginalized communities and ensure economic relief during the festive season.
